April 12, 1961. A Soviet major inside a tiny capsule was shot into the sky, sitting on a rocket. The capsule was a spacecraft. The major was a man called Yuri Gagarin. He was the first man in space. Though he was there for only an hour, he made history.
This iconic image of Gagarin wearing his huge helmet is an iconic one. Nobody knew if his mission would succeed if he would ever return. But he did. It's the foundation for decades of successful travels into our orbit and the moon with Apollo 11.
